Beginner's Serger Machine Basics 101 - Apr 15, 2023 09:30 am
A serger is a complimentary machine to the sewing machine. A serger only stitches forward, there is no reverse, and performs the final closure of knit or cotton fabrics that may fray, shred, or run. A serger also performs decorative stitches on the edge or center of fabric, can install zippers, and even make delicate scarves from thread.
A serger may trim or not trim the edge of the fabric and can add a decorative stitch on the outside of the fabric or perform a looping effect over the inside edges of the fabric to prevent them from fraying.
Most serging is performed on the inside of the fabric with a slight hint of serger thread showing through to the outside.
